From the creation of novels, crossword books, and textbooks, the print industry is critical to delivering education and entertainment to people worldwide. As you dive into your favorite fantasy novel or provide coloring book pages to your child at a bustling restaurant, have you ever wondered how these books came to life?

Unsurprisingly, the first step in the printing process is to write and edit a book digitally, and once all final details are complete, the author will make decisions based on their vision for the look and feel of the novel. This includes font style, size, paper weight, and book layout. Authors will then work with graphic designers to create a visually appealing cover to interest readers.

Once the details are approved and finalized, the electronic files and specifications are sent to the printing company. They begin the physical process by first creating plates (what applies the ink to paper) if the printer uses the web or sheet-fed process. The web printing process involves giant paper rolls that are unwrapped from a protective covering, and are fed directly into high-speed machines, where it expels pages of books quickly and intensely. Unlike web printing, sheet-fed printing uses individual sheets for projects that include lots of details and color, as it places a higher value on quality over how quickly the printers can push out the product.

Once the printing process has been completed, assembling the product is the next step. First, the pages are folded and arranged in the order the author and publisher agreed upon, and then those pages are bound together using glue or stitches. The newly created book block is then passed through a high-tech trimmer, designed explicitly for hefty stacks of paper, and it trims down any excess. Many plants across the country collect and recycle the leftovers, ensuring nothing goes to waste. Afterward, the cover is attached, and the books are packaged and shipped to their final destinations.
