Did you know that in 2012 Kellogg recalled millions of cereal boxes “due to the possible presence of fragments of flexible metal mesh from a faulty manufacturing part?” In January 2015, Unibright Foods recalled tens of thousands of pounds of prepared meat products after it was revealed that packages might contain “extraneous metal materials” by the Department of Agriculture. While these instances happened years ago, this time just last year, Trader Joe’s recalled their multigrain sunflower and flax seeds crackers because they may have contained metal. As one can see, it’s not an uncommon occurrence.

Metal detection is one of the most critical aspects of the food industry. Metal contaminants pose a serious risk to the safety of consumers and product quality and can come from various sources. For example, when a machine wears down, metal fragments from processing equipment that combine, chop products, or package food can break off and contaminate those items. Some packaging contains metal, and if it is corroded even a little bit, it can also land in our food. Metal pieces can break teeth, scratch the esophagus, and cause severe internal damage if ingested.

There are many kinds of metal detectors, but most food factories use a type that works with magnets. These detectors create a magnetic field, and when metal sneaks into our products, it messes with this magnetic field. The machine senses this disruption and knows there’s metal present, and it will automatically remove the contaminated product.
