What’s That Sound? Unpacking the Problem of Noise Pollution

We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but there is a type of pollution that is unseen: noise pollution is the reason forty-eight million Americans have a hearing impairment, and that’s only one of the health issues that come with this epidemic. But what really is noise pollution, and how do we overcome it in industrial settings?

Noise pollution is loud and often repeated noises that have harmful effects not just on the people working in plants, but also on those who live close to them. Shipping and steel workers tend to have the highest levels of occupational noise pollution due to the nature of those industries (the materials used and production) and because they work so close to industrial blowers. Other than machinery, vehicles, drills, bulldozing, quarrying, etc., can also output high-frequency sounds, significantly impacting those nearby.

While hearing loss is the most common consequence of noise pollution, numerous studies have found that it impacts many other aspects of workers’ health. For example, high blood pressure, sleep disturbance, speech impairment, and behavioral disorders such as anger issues and anxiety are common among those with high levels of noise exposure. The main goal would be to design facilities and use equipment that intentionally brings down loud noises, and while we understand that it can be time-consuming and costly, it is an important investment. Noise-absorbent materials in walls, floors, and ceilings can help significantly, and creating acoustic enclosures and specific areas where workers can avoid high-noise zones can further reduce exposure and improve overall workplace safety. Additionally, all sites should have boxes of earphones within range of a high-noise machine or room, as they can provide temporary relief.

While implementing long-term solutions to mitigate industrial noise pollution is crucial, ensuring your existing equipment operates smoothly and within safe noise levels is an immediate and vital step. At Industrial Repair Service, we specialize in the expert repair and maintenance of industrial equipment, ensuring optimal performance and minimizing unnecessary noise output. Don’t let faulty equipment contribute to this unseen pollutant and put your workforce and community at risk. Contact us today!
