How to Throw the Perfect Spring Picnic 

The weather is getting warmer, and the sun is setting later- Spring is finally here! In honor of the first day of Spring, we’re here to help you set up the perfect picnic on a warm weather day.  

Choosing a good location is more important than what lies in the picnic basket. A local park or garden is a go-to; however, if you live near a unique location, opt for a lake or beach. Check the weather before choosing the date so your pretty picnic décor doesn’t get drenched in rain, or fly away in the wind.  

Basket essentials include sandwiches, salads, desserts, and drinks. Here are some of our favorite recipes for each option:  

For a sandwich, the turkey club is classic. This one by Jonathan Melendez goes the extra step by cooking the turkey at home, but you can always replace it with fresh-cut deli meat. While there are many salads to choose from, such as potato and pasta, fruit is a great way to add refreshing flavors to your menu. Other finger foods, including cheese and crackers, can be placed neatly in an array like this, and if you prefer a dip, this spinach and artichoke dip by the NYT is highly rated. Nothing says Spring like carrot cake, and you can easily make it into cupcakes for miniature versions. Don’t forget drinks like lemonade, iced tea, or sparkling cider! 

For serving to go smoothly, you must include plates, cutlery, napkins, and cups in your picnic basket. To make cozy surroundings, cushions on top of a colorful blanket are a must, and additional flowers or greenery, hanging string lights (if appropriate), and playing soft music can create an inviting space.  

For entertainment, games like Frisbee and badminton could be great physical activities to raise your heart rate, or cards and board games could be more relaxing alternatives. You can also bring books or magazines to enjoy under the shade of a tree. 

Don’t forget, once you’re finished, leave your space how you found it. Throw out your trash and perishables, and ensure the space is ready for the next person to set up their picnic.
