Building the Future: The Resurgence of Skilled Trades

Since the early 2000s, there has been a significant decline in trade jobs across the nation. Working in trade was at its peak in the mid-20th century. However, it started to dwindle by the 1950s and 1960s. Once the 1990s hit, there was a significant shift to service-based economies. What once went from young men and women learning to become manufacturers and repair technicians became a push for individuals to earn a higher education and climb the corporate ladder.
While societal advancements promoted the corporate agenda, a stigma towards trade jobs grew due to industry misconceptions. Several examples include that the jobs were considered “unskilled labor,” or there was no room for advancement. For decades, there’s been a skilled trade shortage; however, within the past few years, there’s been a boom in the return of trade jobs. According to the Associate Press and Data from the National Student Clearinghouse, public two-year college enrollment dipped by 7.8% and 3.4% at public four-year institutions. Instead, mechanic and repair trade programs saw an 11.5% enrollment surge, construction trades climbed by 19.3%, and culinary arts programs increased by 12.7%.
There are several reasons for this: College tuition has soared exponentially, making it unaffordable, and many are understandably hesitant to reach for student loans when it can put them in crippling debt for years to come. Young adults have started to look towards manufacturing companies for education since many offer apprenticeships and programs that combine job training with classroom instruction. Because there has been a shortage of skilled workers, there’s a higher rate of financial stability, competitive wages, and benefits because companies are desperate to keep them. With just these reasons alone, it is no surprise as to why there’s been an influx of people drawn to trade industries.
